The first DNS1500 in Lithuania - for dialogue noise suppression, foley, and FX creation

Arturas Pugaciauskas of AP Sounddesign in Lithuania is an award-nominated sound producer with over 20 years of experience. Based in his own multi-purpose surround studio, he works as a recording, mixing and mastering engineer, and has contributed to many film and TV projects as a supervising sound editor, sound designer, foley recordist, and re-recording mixer.

Arturas recently purchased a CEDAR DNS1500, and told us, "I originally bought my DNS1500 for dialogue cleaning. I had tried and used various software plug-ins and other hardware noise reduction, but I can say that nothing performs noise suppression as effectively, as quickly, and without artefacts as my DNS1500. (This sounds like an advertisement, but it's true.) It helps in situations where other tools are too weak, and I'm impressed that it's possible to remove even film camera noise if it not too sharp and not too clearly focussed."

"Now I am discovering more and more purposes for the DNS. For example, I like to record foley fx in quiet outdoor environments, which means that I can have an endless palette of various natural sources. I'm now using the DNS1500 to minimize unwanted background noise. In my role as a music mixer I can also remove unwanted hiss from poorly recorded samples and tracks, and sometimes I use it to shorten reverb tails. And in sound design, it's possible to use the DNS1500 as a creative tool for filter-like fx, such as 'closed ears' and the 'underwater' effect, where the DNS1500 sounds strange and original, and quite different from EQ. In all these situations, the work flow is very fast, and if a problem lies within the range of the DNS1500's capabilities, I can achieve the desired results in seconds."

He concludes, "Over the last few years my work has become oriented toward film/ tv sound postproduction, but sound professionals must now wear many hats to survive in this market, sometimes needing to be a whole sound department in one person. Having started my own business and having invested in specialised equipment such as the DNS1500 I can now perform all the necessary jobs to prepare a movie soundtrack for final mixing at UP Records, the one and only (!) Dolby certified cinema soundstage in Lithuania."

About the DNS1500

If you work with dialogue, the speed, flexibility, and ease of use of the DNS1500 provides solutions to noise reduction problems that you could not previously solve. Furthermore, the DNS1500's near-zero latency means that you do not need to slip the audio against time-code, making it possible to use the DNS1500 in real-time on the dubbing stage. For location sound engineers (who do not have the luxury of random access to the material) the near-zero latency means that the DNS1500 is simple to use with video, and removes the need for a video frame store. Furthermore, the combination of low latency and 24-bit fidelity means that you can leave the DNS1500 permanently in the signal chain without fear of signal degradation.
